Wohngemeinschaft, Köln
During these onrushing wintry nights you still might see a huddled line-up emanating from Richard-Wagner-Straße 39, in Köln. It might seem like the latest in a line of popular Saturday night hang-outs but then, breaking the cliché, a waitress braves the cold with a tray in her hands, dishing out hot tea to the patient public. This is the style of Köln’s Wohngemeinschaft.
The inside of Wohngemeinschaft is an adventure. Loosely translated as “living community”, the bar is separated into 5 distinct sections, or ‘rooms’, each one symbolizing a room one might find in a shared apartment. The door opens up to two rooms.
To the left is the cozy wallpapered bedroom, where groups find themselves a comfortable niche on the beds and chairs. And to the right, the living room stretches out beside the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the street.
An assortment of random vintage couches, chairs, and bookshelves litter the area. If you are waiting for someone, help yourself to a book!
Not necessarily a room, the section across from the bar consists of an intimate old Volkswagon amidst a beach scenery, with a table bolted inside and seats lining the walls.
Past the van is the music room; reminiscent of a 1970’s living room, with cushions on the floor, a jukebox, and a sofa you can sink into. And at the back, another mysterious line-up leads to the funky, bright-red game room. Only one game is played here: ping-pong!
If you are ever unsure whether to go out for cocktails or spend a night in with some friends, Wohngemeinschaft satisfies both desires.
