Tom’s Bar, Prague
Tom’s Bar, Prague
When it comes down to it, our demands of a bar is quite basic – atmosphere. We require and search for a certain ineffable ambiance that can be composed of a blend of structure, design, and architecture.
The combinations of these elements must come together into a harmonious wholeness. Along with a fine selection of drinks and thought-out lighting, the complexity of a great atmosphere can be conjured up.
Tom’s Bar at the Augustine Hotel in Prague, winner of the 2009 European Hotel Design Award for ‘Best Café, Bar, Nightclub or Lounge, has a strong and thrilling atmosphere. The architecture of the Augustine Hotel lends a magnificent historic element and contrasts the elegantly modern interior.
The Hotel, part of the esteemed Rocco Forte Collection, is a relic of grand Baroque panache, with double-height walls and stunning ceiling frescoes that had to be restored by local craftsmen. The lighting chosen reflects this time period, masquerading as simple and soft candlelight.
The interior design of the furniture and bar is at once simple and cosmopolitan, seemingly at odds with the bold historical architecture, yet they manage to converge together. Structurally, a black marble bar cleverly hides the service area and elevators in the back, while also creating a contemporary exclamation point in the room.
Right outside, Tom’s Bar leads out to Tom’s Arcade, an outdoor colonnade patio that provides an alternative space to relax and enjoy the occasional live music performances.
Tom’s Bar is like being at a castle and a cocktail lounge at once. It invokes a truly memorable atmosphere by successfully incorporating its historical inheritance and modern appeal.
