Mystique, Santorini

Mystique, Santorini

Santorini is the crescent-shaped southernmost island of the Cyclades chain in the Southern Aegean Sea. It is also arguably the most romantic place in the entire world.

At sunset, the town of Oia offers stunning views of the sun as it hangs above the horizon before its final dip. However, the secret is out and the best public spots are often teeming with tourists elbowing each other for the best photo-op.

Thankfully, the nearby Mystique Resort offers refuge from the crowds with their 18 suites and villas, each with a private panoramic terrace. The hotel, designed by Richard Lefebvre of Bleu Nature, is a 2,000 foot space carved out of the Oia cliffs and provides a well-needed sense of elegant comfort in an often cramped area.

Their design philosophy is contemporary and forward-thinking while still paying homage to the traditional white-washed aesthetic of the area. The façade of the buildings look as if they’ve been carved from a bar of soap.

There is also a conscientious effort to respect the harmony between man and nature. Much of the building was made with limestone sourced from a nearby quarry, hand-carved wood, and local glass from Santorini.

The 150 year-old wine cellar is also a nod to the island’s past. On the other hand, every room is outfitted with the latest in digital technology and the outdoor infinity pool looks like it might spill out into the Aegean at any moment.

In a place as beautiful as Santorini, there is no point in a hotel trying to upstage its surroundings. To simply be inspired is enough. In what can sometimes be a difficult balancing act, Mystique has done a memorable job of fitting in amongst its natural beauty.
