Karriere, Copenhagen

Somewhere between a bar and art gallery, Karriere is a welcome new addition to the nightlife scene in Copenhagen. Located in the city’s rejuvenated Kodbyen section, or Meatpacking District, Karriere was started by the artist Jeppe Hein and his sister Lærke Hein, who combined their talents to give young Danes something a little different than your average neighborhood bar with Carlsberg on tap.

Artists like Johannes Wohnseifer and Olafur Eliasson have helped shape the function and design of Karriere, often blurring the line between the two. The bar itself is art, a sleek reflective countertop under two massive, oversized industrial green lamp fixtures.

In an interactive space like this that emphasizes the work on its walls as much as the drinks on the menu - and doesn’t always distinguish between the two, Karriere is helping to bring art back into the everyday forum of conversation in Copenhagen.

As for the cocktails, their drink menu is serious, borrowing from Danish ingredients like elderflower cordial and house-made birch water. Yuppies are encouraged to order sparingly, as they may be overcharged.

Those looking forward to a strawberry flavored concoction in the middle of winter? This isn’t the place for you. Trust the bartender and perhaps he’ll fashion you a “whijito too 90,” made with rye whiskey, fresh ginger juice, maple syrup, and a bit of smoked whiskey.

Enjoy your drink and don’t forget to look around.
