Hotel Missoni, Edinburgh
A winning relationship between architecture, hospitality and design, the first Missoni Hotel in Edinburgh has had a fairytale year since its opening on June 8th, 2009. Since then, it has become the first hotel in Scotland to gain a 5-star rating in the last 4 years and just recently, it was nominated for the Doolan Prize, Scotland’s premier award for the nation’s best in architecture.
Located in the middle of Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile on the George IV Bridge, Allan Murray Architects were able to design a building that combines elements of the neighborhoods historic past as well as contemporary aesthetics, by using sandstone and a brush of timber paneling in the facade. But while the Missoni Hotel might not have won the Doolan Prize for its nevertheless striking architecture, the esoteric designs within its doors are surely award worthy.
Recognized for their use of vibrant colors and unabashed patterns, Missoni, with the help of interior-designer Matteo Thun, have turned each of the 136 rooms and restaurant into a supernova of vitality and energy. The rooms are filled with dynamic zig-zags, stripes and shapes almost to an exaggerated level, yet it somehow manages to use its campiness to achieve elegance.
The Missoni Hotel is a powerful joint venture between the celebrated Missoni fashion house and the Rezidor Hotel Group. There was one aim to their endeavor, to create the most illustrious brand of designer-lifestyle hotel. On the heels of their success in Scotland, they plan to open the first designer hotel in Kuwait City in 2010, followed by Capetown, and Dubai. Their mission, though, is to eventually open 30 new branches all over the world, draping the world in Missoni’s exuberant colors.
