Harry’s Bar, Venice

Harry’s Bar, Venice

Despite its labyrinthine canals and alleyways, it’s hard to get off the beaten track in Venice. You’re always bound to stumble into a fellow tourist just when you thought you had found an authentic osteria only the locals know about. It can be frustrating. Here’s some advice: stop trying.

While it’s not advisable to throw caution to the wind and go with the menu turistico at every restaurant in Piazza San Marco, the fact is that Venice is teeming with tourists because it’s like no other place in the world. Get lost; you’ll see the city better that way. After a long day of sightseeing, you’ll most likely be in need of a seat and a cold beverage.

That’s where Harry’s Bar comes in. Say what you will about the place, it has class. Maybe it’s those white jackets and the precise movements of the man behind the bar - or maybe we’ve been watching too much Mad Men - but the place has a refined atmosphere that speaks of an earlier era.

So brush up on your Italian and order a Bellini or Vodka Martini. Also, don’t worry about being blinded by a flash of light. Cameras aren’t allowed.
