Aarhus, Denmark

Under the starry and dark Danish night this winter, let the sea breeze carry you into Aarhus’ Den Gamle By, or “The Old Town” in English. It is a unique concept, reliving history through architecture, art and theater.

An ancient village within modern Aarhus, Den Gamle By is comprised of over 70 houses, gardens, workshops, and exhibitions that have successfully paused time. Each building, piece of furniture and art here is a real souvenir of another era, some pieces having survived from as early as the 16th century.

A team of experts has been able to reconstruct buildings based on thorough research, while some houses have been taken apart and brought back together on site.

Entering from the northern gates atop a slender hill, past the chipped walls that serve as the barriers from modern day to days of yore, you are already in the midst of a Late-Medieval town. Traversing down the dirt path a market appears in an old square.

Authentic gas lamps light up the pathways by the lake as men and women in costume respectfully welcome you to their world. The smell of freshly baked gingerbreads and sweets dance in the air and down a dark side street, an ancient brewery still produces its very own malt.

This year, as part of a special exhibition on Denmark’s mythical Pixies and Elves, a special loft is being opened as well as an artistic exhibition that has preserved the history of Christmas and all that it means to this little imaginative country on Europe’s northern tip.
