Ian McKellen Is Waiting For Godot

Best known to contemporary audiences as the villain Magneto in The X-Men trilogy, or as Galdalf the Grey in the Oscar winning The Lord of the Rings films; a roles he’s set to reprise when director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) makes a two film adaptation of The Hobbit in 2011, Sir Ian McKellen seems to make a concious effort to appear on the stage as often as possible.

The role of Gogo in Samuel Beckett’s classic allegorical, often revived drama Waiting For Godot must be one that he’s come to cherish, as he will be performing the role at London’s Haymarket Theatre, from January until April, 2010. This return to the role is all the more pleasant when you consider that he last played the role in a seperate run, also at the Haymarket, for 4 months in 2009.

The popularity and continued relevance of Beckett’s 1953 play is evident when you consider that in addition to the West End version, 2009 also saw a Broadway revival of the play, starring Nathan Lane.

McKellen’s co-star in the 2009 version was Patrick Stewart, who played opposite McKellan as Magneto’s adversary Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films. Stewart has opted not to return for the 2010 version, and instead the role of Didi will be performed by renowned British thespian Roger Rees.

Waiting For Godot is at the Haymarket Theatre from January 21st, for 11 weeks only. For tickets and further information, visit www.waitingforgodottheplay.com
