Catherine Deneuve, Still Standing
Catherine Deneuve, Still Standing
Her name evokes visions of beauty, glamour, and true elegance, and these visions have not subsided with time. While many will remember French screen icon Catherine Deneuve from her iconic roles, such as bored housewife Séverine, in Luis Buñuel ’s 1967 classic Belle De Jour, or alongside fellow icon Gérard Depardieu in the Francois Truffaut masterpieces Mississippi Mermaid or The Last Metro.
It’s hard to believe that Catherine Deneuve is now 66 years old; but despite the passing of the years, she has still retained her sophisticated, feminine beauty, and is still a prolific actress in France.
There have been flirtations with Hollywood, mainly in the 1970’s and 80’s, such as 1977’s March or Die, alongside Gene Hackman, or the 1983 cult film, The Hunger, which was controversial due to Deneuve’s fairly explicit love scene with co-star Susan Sarandon.
Despite these occasional dalliances, Deneuve has remained truly French in her career, and has proven that if an age bias exists, then it certainly doesn’t apply to her. It’s easy to see why she was the muse of designer Yves Saint Laurent for so long.
2009 saw her appear in no less than 4 feature films, and with 2010 seeing another 2 films (so far) from her, including Potiche, the new film from acclaimed new “new wave” director Francois Ozon (which once again reunites her with Dépardieu).
Deneuve continues to have an appeal and a work ethic that most other actresses can only dream of.
