Thinking: Global Distribution of Wealth
According to a new global wealth report by Credit Suisse, global wealth is presently at an all-time high of $231 trillion. Just for the sake of emphasis, if you add up all the money in world, everything you and everyone else have, the total of that sum is $231 trillion.
Now, take 38.5% of that $231 trillion, which equals $89.1 trillion, is controlled by 0.5%, or 29.7 million, of the world’s population. Nearly 40% of the world’s wealth is concentrated in 0.5% of the population, not even close to the “1%” cries that you hear in the streets of New York, Rome and Athens.
The bottom two-thirds, the 67.6% of the world’s population, roughly 3 billion people, account for just 3.3% of the world’s wealth.
Think of it like this:
29.7 million people, throughout the world, have $89.1 trillion to share amongst themselves, while….
3 billion people, around the world, have $7.6 trillion to share amongst themselves.
That is the current state of the global distribution of wealth.
Have a look at the pyramid above and really give it a good thought. Does that make sense to you?
