Mer et Découvertes, Corsica

For the past fifteen years, Patrice Arend’s eye for the esoteric has made his nautical and scientific antique store, Mer et Découvertes, a must for any serious yachtsmen and collectors visiting the Mediterranean.

Located in a 15th century cave in the old port of Bonifacio on Corsica’s southern coast, it’s no minor feat that so many find his store without the help of one of the many sextants on sale inside.

Arend’s inventory represents the maritime history of Corsica, a fiercely proud island occupied by the Greeks, Romans, and Genoese before finally being incorporated into France, which has always looked to the sea to survive.

Mer et Découvertes boasts an impressive collection of celestial globes dating as far back as the 17th century, Copernican scales, telescopes, model ships, and even an old captain’s cane made of shark vertebrae.

The authentic wares on sale have attracted a loyal clientele that includes the likes of Sting, so you never know what you might find.
