London City Airport, London

London City Airport, London

London City Airport is nowhere near as well known as Heathrow, Gatwick or Luton, but it’s attempting to use its geographical advantages to change that. Visitors to London may have seen a number of billboards that have sprung up around the city, showing the airports departure lounge as being London city itself.

This is because London City Airport is the only one of the 4 airports servicing London that actually lies within the city limits.

The Airport is serviced by Docklands Light Rail, meaning a journey to central London (with a surprisingly straightforward connection to the London Underground) barely takes 40 minutes. The logic of their campaign is sound, and this awareness will likely reach its maximum in 2012, as the airport is situated less than 2 miles from the site of the London Olympics.

The airports somewhat basic interior might deter some, but renovations are underway (due to be completed in autumn 2010), which will render the airport into a user friendly shoppers’ paradise that is more commensurate with the typical idea of the modern airport.

Having said that, there’s barely time to take the interior of the airport in, as travelers can check in a mere 20 minutes before departure with checked baggage, or a miniscule 15 minutes with hand luggage only.

When it becomes common knowledge that passengers are allowed to sleep a little bit longer, can take an unhurried journey to the airport and then check in 15-20 minutes before departure, then London City Airport might not be such a well kept secret for much longer.
