Dublin’s Sailing Set

The weather may be less than friendly in Ireland´s capital city during the dark winter months, but that doesn’t stop avid and amateur sailors alike from looking forward to light at the end of the seasonal tunnel.

In seaside suburban Dublin, just 12 kilometers (7.4 miles) south of the city, Dun Laoghaire is at the center of the action. Its large area of sheltered water allows the local Powerboat School to operate year round lessons and the Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club offers weekly lectures for aficionados.

Pints and good auld Irish craic are at hand for those wanting to take advantage of the social element of the sail.

2009 saw the successful Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta draw skippers from as far around the globe as New Zealand. Almost 500 boats and 3, 500 sailors filled the harbor on its last day, battling breeze to achieve a fantastic finish.

The dates have already been confirmed for the next event in 2011 and are set for the 7th through the 10th of July. A 30 minute television documentary is to cover the event and local restaurants and eateries will offer their usual special offers to build up the festive spirit of this biannual extravaganza.
