Climbing: Brooklyn Boulders, New York

If you are bored of the usual routine of hitting the gym, or setting off for a jog, why not try the latest exercise craze of rock climbing. Climbing is recognized as one of the best forms of body training; not only does it strengthen your upper body, particularly the shoulders, biceps, and forearms, but the exertion of the climb gives the heart a healthy workout. There is also the psychological thrill of conquering your fears and reaching your target goal, which adds an extra blast of excitement to the sport.

Yet for those of us, who languish in cities rather than the Rockies, there is no need to fear – we may not be able to quickly sprint to the great outdoors and climb a nature-created mountain, but enterprising businesses are bringing the mountain to us.

The sport has grown so much in popularity that you can easily find a climbing center in any major international city. In New York, the Brooklyn Boulders offer excellent facilities for veterans and freshmen climbers alike. The enormous centre, with around 10,000 square feet of climbable terrain can be found on Degraw Street, just minutes from the hustle of central Manhattan.

Experts and brave rookies can attempt to clamber up and along overhangs of up to 45 degrees, while beginners can take it slow on the smaller, starter-friendly walls.

Cool is the modus operandi at Brooklyn Boulders. Started by a group of friends from Babson College in Massachusetts, the center is a privately-run operation aiming to offer great service and expert training, in a “chill-lax” environment.
