Design on the Rhine
Cutting through the German heartland, the Rhine River is one of its most important lifelines. For the short period from February 7th until the 9th, it will also be pumping blood into the fashion world as the ‘Design am Rhein’ competition will unveil the collections of 10 talented winners.
For the first time the design competition has decided to open up its borders and let some non-Germans talents in, rightfully deciding that the best way to truly capture the creative spirit is by removing all limits.
‘Design am Rhein’ is not a competition aimed at finding the next great trend or to find someone who will fit into the mainstream ideology, rather, it aims to find ambitious individuals with a strong sense of independence and visionary ideas, ready to shake up the industry.
The young designers on show will be hoping that the blood and tears they have shed until now will be strong enough to move not only the illustrious jury, but also the international fashion scene.
Two highly anticipated lines are the latest winter collection by ANTONIAGOY and “The Dynamic of a Dress II” by kimberit. kimberit designer Kim Berit Heppelmann approaches her garments as if they were canvases, an art-form in itself that needs to be explored more. The first part of the series has already garnered her plenty of awards and much more is expected this time around.
ANTONIAGOY’s collection is inspired by an even more abstract subject; the history of the earth. Finding inspiration from nature’s violent and animalistic side, she mixes the jagged with the subtle, the dark and heavy with the airy.
While the complete collections may not have seen the light of day yet, anticipation is already booming to a high-octane level. In order to separate the visionaries from the pretenders, keep an eye and an ear out towards the scenic city of Dusseldorf this coming February.
