Damien Hirst for Louis Vuitton
Damien Hirst for Louis Vuitton
The inner-workings of Damien Hirst’s mind must be a tapestry of death and beauty. This is evident in the latest series of Luis Vuitton’s ‘Maîtres du Savoir-Faire’ collection, where Hirst has lent his imagination and hands in designing a unique set of twin trunks.
If the Hirst trunks seem quite unusual, it’s because they unabashedly are. Finding inspiration from the dark crevices of another creative mind, the pieces are based on David Cronenberg’s horror-thriller Dead Ringers. The strange surgical set in the film caught Hirst’s attention and the trunks have been designed to house such tools inside it.
That is as far as the inspiration goes. Otherwise, the trunks are purely Hirst, showcasing various elements that have adorned his creations. Open the trunks and inside you will find a silver skull strategically place on the inner lid. The skull is death and the impossibility of comprehending death, a well noted obsession of the artist.
The leather casing features another favored motif, the butterfly. Butterflies of various shapes and size decorate all sides of the exterior, hiding the possible menacing contents of the blue microfiber interior. The butterfly, while one of the more beautiful symbols floating around in Hirst’s mind, also plays as a suggestion of death, considering its limited lifespan.
While surgical equipment carrying trunks might never have a high demand, it is just another prominent example of what can occur when a fashion house like Louis Vuitton, in their efforts to promote the arts, collaborates with one of the world’s most sought-after artist.
Designed in collaboration with Luis Vuitton’s workshop in Asnières, these specialized pieces commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Red Cross.
