Fluxus at the White Gallery, Rome

The White Gallery in Rome, actually a clothing store and not an art gallery, has a magnificent crown in the Fluxus. Conceived in collaboration between Michela Vianello and Karim Rashid, the 60 square meter Murano glass sculpture hangs over Italian shoppers every day.

Vianello designed the overall shape and structure of the piece, which undulates through the air in a wave pattern. Rashid focused on the individual glass pieces which come together in a knitted style to form the fabric of the sculpture.

The entire fabric, made amazingly from 80,000 handmade glass elements, is lit by 5000 separate lamps. All together, the sculpture weighs in at 6000 kg of technology and design. The designers create movement and a 3D effect, as the knitted glass comes in many gradations: first white, three variations of gray, and black.

It is a mesmerizing site that is pulled together by combining a well executed mix of light, glass, and tasteful design.
