Brazil’s Design Duo in Germany

Brazil’s Design Duo in Germany

In the German town of Weil am Rhein, where Germany borders on France and Switzerland, the Vitra Design Museum is playing host to an exhibition that counters the often austere beauty of the town with a colorful, playful aesthetic.

Antibodies- The Works of Fernando and Humberto Campana showcases the ongoing success of these Brazilian designers; brothers who are based in Sao Paolo.

Best known for their proclivity for using a variety of recycled, or “found,” objects in the creation of their chairs; a popular ongoing motif is the use of stitched together teddy bears or soft toys to make the cushion element of the chair. To actually sit on these skewed pieces would be a sacrilege (and would most likely devalue the considerable investment needed to buy one).

An almost surreal amalgam of ordinary and even junk materials, brought together to make furniture that is both elegant and quirky. The physical materials of construction aside, the material worth of their product is steadily climbing. Earlier last year, one of their rare Sonia Diniz chairs sold for US 43,000 dollars.

The collection is a refreshing experience, and the Frank Gehry designed Vitra Design Museum is in itself, worthy of much attention. The exhibition continues until February 28th, 2010.
