Madeleines Madteater, Copenhagen
The gourmet restaurants of today rely more and more on atmosphere and overall presentation. Customers demand bigger and bolder dining experiences. Madeleines Madteater, in Copenhagen, fully submerges themselves on this trend, as they place you in the middle of a theatre spectacle, fusing performance art, drama, music, and set-design with top-class cuisine.
Mette Sia Martinussen and Nikolaj Danielsen have dramatized the experience of food through various extravagant theatre-dinners in the past 3 years, recreating not only their menus, but also the lavish set-designs and performances.
The former repository of the Tuborg brewery is the setting of gastronomy put into a new context, as guests line banquet tables, and smell and taste their way through the night in what is also a type of social experience for the big-city dweller.
The current manifestation of Madeleines Madteater aims to explore childhood, and invites the guests on a journey to a simpler time. The 10 course-menu starts with a glass of milk, proceeded by being spoon-fed by the waiters and encouraged to eat the food with their fingers.
A typical Scandinavian packed lunch inspires the next course. After the gourmet dinner plates, a fantasy decadent marshmallow layer cake fully adorned with candles and childish decoration gets carried into the restaurant.
While it may seem like a joke pulled on unwitting spectators, the chefs are very serious about the experience they serve and have quickly become darlings of the Danish food critics. The building also houses a food-laboratory that experiments with molecular gastronomy.
