Tim Burton’s Mind at MoMa

Tim Burton’s Mind at MoMa

Where else but from the depths of Tim Burton’s wacky mind can you find a film about teenage alienation starring a boy with scissors for hands, an animation about the kidnapping of Christmas, and a book of idiosyncratic illustrations of monster like-personalities.

The Museum of Modern Art in New York is currently exploring the full oeuvre of one of America’s most prominent living auteurs. His distinctive style and stories, inspired by a pop-culture childhood of comic books, monster films, and fascination of characters on the fringes of society, has made a fan out of many people all over the world.

Despite the plenty of accomplishments and accolades, we have only begun to scratch the surface of the Tim Burton we have all come to know. Most of his work, especially those of his illustrations and artwork, remains unseen to the public.

The exhaustive exhibition at the MoMA attempts to cover the full body of work of this peculiar personality.Beginning with the childhood drawings that uncover a burgeoning artist, the exhibition encompasses over seven hundred never-seen-before works of art.

The full range of his creativity is revealed as drawings, photographs, paintings, storyboards, puppets, costumes, and cinematic paraphernalia are included from his established works and also his rather more unknown projects as a photographer, writer, and artist.

In conjunction with his latest book The Art of Tim Burton, which features over one thousand illustrations over four hundred pages, the exhibition at MoMA will also include an absolute film retrospective of his feature films.

On the side, the film series Tim Burton and the Lurid Beauty of Monsters will also be featured at the museum. These films, hand-picked by Burton, reveal the inspiration and guidance he received while growing up as he struggled to understand the world.
