The Art-Campus Project, Berlin
It is projects like Art-Campus that has enhanced Berlin’s behemoth reputation as one of the leading lights in contemporary. Inaccessible space and sky-high rent might be hindering the need for contemporary change in most urban areas, but not in Berlin.
In the prospering Heidestrasse district of Berlin, the freedom of space, artistic sovereignty, and contemporary design have allowed to combine to create a truly unique neighborhood. The whole neighborhood is currently witness to massive expansion and redevelopment.
The vast space vacated since the relocation of the main train station has opened up a world of possibility. The cobblestone streets and old warehouses will be turned into an impressive urban accommodation complex, complete with new housing, restaurants, offices, and a marina.
In the midst of it is the ‘Halle am Wasser’, the shining beacon of Art-Campus and to the modern philosophy of Berlin’s urban culture.
Known as the ‘Halle am Wasser’ (hall at the water) due to its location by the Berlin-Spandau canal, the designers of Potts Architects aimed to create a new multi-functional nucleus for contemporary art.
The converted old warehouse, stretching over an area of 2500 square meters, is separated into six galleries that serve as exhibition halls and also include their own office spaces. The buildings purpose is simple: to allow the space and time for the creative minds of artists and designers to roam.
The most interesting aspect of the building has to be the translucent-skin façade that is stretched over the old structure, which allows natural ventilation and the redirection of natural light into the exhibition galleries. Like a blanketed crystalline train, it is the epicenter of the neighborhood.
