Over a century of Kunsthaus Zurich

2010 sees one of Europe’s leading museum, the Kunsthaus Zurich, celebrate one hundred years of dedication to the arts. It is an anniversary well worth celebrating. Known for its opulent and grand collection of art that spans movements as well as mediums, the Kunsthaus has decided to celebrate by inviting over some of the most distinguished names in art history.

The festivities began with a bang when the now infamous Bührle Collection makes its public debut. Ever since thieves made off with a hefty take a couple years ago, the private collection has been the center of intrigue. So for the first time, in a sort of dress rehearsal for 2015 when the collection will get its own rightful home in the Kunsthaus expansion project, the 150-piece collection will be shown in its entirety to the public until the 16th of May, 2010.

As if the prospect of rediscovering van Gogh, Cézanne, Degas, and Monet is not intriguing enough, Kunsthaus Zurich will also revisit the famed Picasso retrospective of 1932. At the time, it was the first ever retrospective of the artist and was even curated by Picasso himself.

The artist and the exhibition’s influence on artistic history cannot be measured, but reliving it may certainly be possible. Showcasing 60 of the major works of the 1932 retrospective, the Picasso exhibition runs from October 2010 until January 2011, which includes a historical trace of its impact on the art world.

2010 will be a splendid year for the art lover. We are reminded quite often of the powers and role of art, not only today, but also in time immemorial. But it is not quite often we get a chance to see such splendid collections, let alone revisit such groundbreaking exhibitions.

It is uplifting to see that Kunsthaus Zurich, 100 years on, still displays such passion for art.
