Olafur Eliasson says, “Take Your Time”
Much like the modern life of the urban-nomad, Olafur Eliasson spends his time between his home in Copenhagen, his studio in Berlin, and his native Iceland. Like many of us, and as more and more join our ranks, the life of a vagabond knows no borders. Time and place can be interchangeable; they can be but mere states of mind.
Drawing on his upbringing in Iceland, he is inspired by the extreme landscape and natural weather phenomena that is witness to the far northern hemisphere. This is not exclusive to the creative use of natural elements such as water, moss, and stone.
Intense experiences of light, mirrors and color are integral to Eliasson’s pieces, altering reality for the viewer by bringing them out of the present and into another plane of consciousness and being.
While his illustrious career has included a range of mediums that includes sculpture and photography, it is his grand-scale installations that truly capture his audience.
The ‘One-Way Color Tunnel’ is like being inside a kaleidoscope, with the use of glass and acrylic mirrors, its jarred edges and diffusion of light illuminate the interior in a spectacular fashion.
‘360° room for all colours’ reminds one of what it must be like inside a nebulae. At nine foot tall, the fluorescent lights and curved projection foil emit an experience of light and color that truly immerses the individual in its interstellar resplendence.
Currently, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney is the very first time an Olafur Eliasson exhibition has been shown in such a large scale.
If you are in Sydney, and if between now and April you aren’t going anywhere, then just let Olafur Eliasson take you on a journey you’ve never been on before.
