Moderna Museet: Now in Malmö

The Stockholm Moderna Museet is a name synonymous with artistic integrity, one of the most known names in the world of European modern art, and its reputation, as well as physical size, seems to continue growing. Since December 26th of last year, the first stage of the Moderna expansion was completed with the inauguration of its Malmö branch.

Housed in a former Electricity station, the unambiguously named Moderna Museet Malmö will not just be a secondary location for second-hand art borrowed from Stockholm. It will proudly be an autonomous body, displaying their own independent exhibits whilst lending plenty of important works from Stockholm’s twentieth century gamut.

The grand kick-off of the museum showcases three very impressive and distinct exhibitions. For the whole of this year an impressive array of sixties art will be showcased in the collection dubbed SPECTACULAR TIMES.

It is an ode to an era that marked a significant turning point within society as well as the art world. The Moderna Museet collection includes works from Sweden, France, and of course the United States, and pieces by such artists as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Öyvind Fahlström, and Carolee Schneemann.

Belgium’s Luc Tuyman presents a collection of his most recent works in the exhibition Against the Day. The highly regarded contemporary artist deals in subject matter of surveillance, pop culture, and mass paranoia in the modern plugged-in society.

The third exhibition gives voice to the younger, up-and-coming generation of European artists. Astrid Svangren’s exhibition of paintings and drawings deals with space, not just physical but also psychological and emotional, conjuring up a dreamy labyrinth within the exhibition space.

The Modern Museet Malmö cannot be missed, even to the untrained eye. A shockingly blood-orange perforated steel cage surrounds the building, diffusing as much natural light as possible into the entrance, as the words Moderna Museet are slashed on the wall on street level.
