Martha Rosler, New York

Over the past 40 years, Martha Roster has held a number of different jobs as a photographer, video producer, and writer.

Perhaps her more well know works have been her videotapes; particularly the “Semiotics of the Kitchen” in 1975, to critique the interpretation of traditional women’s roles in modern society.

Currently, Ms. Rosler is on display at the Michell-Inn & Nash Gallery in New York. The exhibition, running through October 11, is a continuation of her series “Bringing the War Home,” where she uses photomontages to express her political views.

Ms. Rosler began the series in the 1960s to protest the Vietnam War and was inspired to restart the project due to her opposition to the Bush administration and the war in Iraq.

Her recent show, entitled “Great Power,” is a collection of colorful digital prints contrasting images of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan with glamour scenes in the U.S. In one piece, called the “invasion,” tanks are surrounded by a fleet of men in designer suits and well groomed hair.

Ms. Rosler’s effort is to reconnect the public to what she calls “the here and the there” to remind observers that it is all part of one world.
