Mandela Bose, Philadelphia

A collection of the Indian Modernist Mandela Bose is on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The exhibition, “Rhythms of India: The Art of Mandela Bose,” challenges the idea that modernism is purely a Western phenomenon.

Bose’s paintings are an example that modernism developed everywhere in accordance to different environments, time, and social pressures.

The show is a joint effort by the San Diego Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. Bose’s works are layout in sequence according to their year created. It runs until the beginning of September.

Sections of Bose’s work will then be added to the show “Multiple Modernities; India, 1905-2005,” which will run through December 7th, 2008.
