Carmen Herrera

Carmen Herrera

Carmen Herrera has been painting for almost seven decades but it was only recently that she came to the fore as a pioneer of Latin American Modernism and Geometric Abstraction. Herrera’s work is characterized by its rigid lines and blocks of color applied in flat solid areas.

Works are composed of opposing chromatic planes, the symmetry and asymmetry of which simultaneously creates tension and harmony; the formal simplicity and application of color convey an intense physicality in her work.

Carmen Herrera first showed at Lisson Gallery in 2010 and will have a major historical exhibition at the gallery in Spring 2012.

On October 19, Herrera’s work will be part of a joint exhibition with artists Daniel Buren, Anish Kapoor and Jason Martin at the FIAC Grand Palais, in Paris. The exhibition is open to the public starting Thursday, October 20 to Sunday October 23.
