Berlin International Film Festival 2010
The Berlin International Film Festival will celebrate its 60th birthday in 2010, and it promises to be a fitting tribute to one of the most important events in the cinema calendar.
After Cannes, the Berlinale is one of Europe’s biggest film festivals, attracting over 20,000 industry professionals, including some 4,000 journalists. Unlike the more exclusive events, however, Berlin is renowned for its inclusive nature – last year over 270,000 tickets were sold, giving it the largest audience of any festival in the world.
This year will see a series of special commemorative events taking place, including a screening of Fritz Lang’s original cut of his 1927 masterpiece Metropolis, the first time it has ever been shown after being reconstructed by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau Foundation.
Continuing the sense of camaraderie is the Berlinale Flashback, a special competition which invites members of the public who have attended previous festivals to send in accounts of their experiences, with all submissions being entered into a raffle for 5 pairs of tickets for a gala screening at the Berlinale Palast, the festival’s main venue.
It has recently been announced that the chair of the 2010 festival jury will be Werner Herzog, one of the most famous figures in world cinema, and he is charged with the daunting task of picking the winner of the Golden Bear, the festival’s highest accolade, from the 400 films set to be shown.
So even at sixty, the Berlin International Film Festival looks set to be as lively and vibrant a celebration of cinema, glamour and celebrity as it was when it first began.
