Winery Kellerei Nals Margreid by Markus Scherer
This is possibly the most contemporary, style conscience winery we have ever seen. Tucked away in the most northern part of Bozen, Italy, Kellerei Nals-Margreid is a union between the Cellars Nalles and Magre-Niclara companies that merge as a single entity in 1985.
Their effort is to cultivate some of the best wine from Strada del Vino of Alto Adige. The company has over 140 growers that cultivate 150 hectares of vineyards for its cellar. The grapes are harvested for the Baron Salvadori range of wines, which includes Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Cabernet.
To better organize its operation and production process, the company turned to Architect Markus Scherer to develop a new structure for the delivery and cellaring of the grapes.
The team created a new vinification tower, a large underground cellar and a new barrel cellar in the court.
Here is the description from Markus Scherer:
The new main building with a socket zone is built up of brown red colored insulating concrete, which forms a chromatic unit with the bordering cemetery consisting of porphyry stones as well as the porphyry cliff of the Sirmianer hill.
The convolution on the bottom side of the shingle follows the static force lines and creates a braced surface like an origami.
The barrel cellar is placed into the court like an oversize case of wine, according to this it is a wooden structure. The new materials are left naturally, so they blend harmoniously into the overall setting and thus correspond with the basic ideology of the product manufactured: independent, honest and authentic.
The only creepy part about the project is that the winery is located right next to neatly organized turn of the century cemetery.
