Housing+, Denmark
It is easy to see why Denmark was chosen to be the host of the UN Climate Change Conference. With projects like the pioneering Housing+, Denmark is at the forefront of using renewable energy in architecture and design.
Celebrated firm C. F. Møller Architects passed the rigorous zero-energy demands to create an exceptional building that completely relies on renewable energy. The mission of this pilot project was to create public housing that combines creative design and efficient energy.
The Housing+ project will stand in the city of Aalborg, by a fjord, which alongside the specialized inclining roof is the source of its ingenious energy scheme. The 1200 m2 roof consists of solar panels that will act as the power plant, combining the use of both solar cells and solar heating.
The fjord will power the heat pumping, and generated energy is stored in an insulated 12 by 3 meter water tank during the daytime. Together with the roof it is enough to power the whole building all year long.
In addition and for extra security, 4 low-noise wind turbines use the windy locale of Aalborg for the operation of power surges as well as recharging electric cars.
This unique building will house 60 different units, from up to 4 to 12 storey’s high under its sloping roof, which creates its triangular shape. At the very front, where the roof will meet the ground, the building arches in order to hold a public gazebo and café.
The radical design challenges the architecture industry and pioneers the need for creative methods in a changing world. Built for environmentally-responsible consumers, Housing+ provides the opportunity to live out the complete ecological lifestyle.
