Fluid: The Floating Pavilion For The 2012 World Expo

This amphibious pavilion is the work of Melbourne-based architectural firm Peddle Thorpe Architects. It was designed for the 2012 World Expo taking place in Yeosu, South Korea, with the theme “The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities.”

With this in mind, key Peddle Thorpe architect Antoine Damery took great care that the concept of their exhibition space was based on a sustainable and environmentally conscience design. The firm heavily weighed the impact of the pavilion on its coastal location and its surrounding, highly relevant considering that the city of Yeosu consist of the Yeosu peninsula and 317 islands.

Peddle Thorpe’s ultimate goal is that the Fluid be used long after the World Expo as a way to encourage Korea’s Pacific neighbors to work together in the environmental preservation of the ocean and the ecosystem. The firm cleverly designed the pavilion so that it can be detached from the site and sailed to other cities.

Some have described the design as a “whale-like” pavilion, we think of it as the head of an anaconda charging forward to protect its habitat.
